HEALTH & WELLNESS

Health & Wellness are much more than not being ill!

How old are you?

Not many people over 35 enjoy continuous good health. Most endure a state of low level illness which doesn’t stop them operating but does affect the quality of their life.

Health is much more than not being ill! There are varying degrees of health which are increasingly covered by the term Wellness.

The medical profession is invaluable for dealing with extreme illness or accidents but they know relatively little about improving wellness.

Much of this health improvement can be achieved by natural means, most of all understanding what our body is doing and what it needs. A healthy body is of course better able to protect itself from illness and recover from accidents.

To start you off we offer list of books aimed at explaining some of the principles of wellness and its ability to protect us from the health hazards of our time.

What Your Doctor Doesn’t Know About Nutritional Medicine May Be Killing You
- Dr Ray Strand, MD
A very powerful book but written by a Doctor in the hope of convincing other Doctors to look at the significant body of scientific evidence for the beneficial effects of nutritional medicine. For the open-minded lay person with a strong interest in this area, it is compelling reading.

Fit for Life - Harvey & Marilyn Diamond
This very straight forward book goes through the basics of our body processes food. It minimises medical terminology and gives some excellet guidance sheduling and combining our food for optimum energy, weight and health. After reading this book, you will never see your food in the same way.

Immunopower - Dr Patrick Quillin

Food is better Medicine than Drugs - Patrick Holford & Jerome Burne

BODY SIZE AND WHAT WE EAT
One of the hottest topics not to be talked about in a sensible way is the area I have called ‘Body Size and What We Eat’.
These are neutral terms to describe neutral issues. However, these are often given.other descriptions which become very emotive .. and maybe that is why people avoid talking about them!
So let us look at these issues in a neutral way!

Feedback – Here are two very interesting responses to the first article  on Body Size and What we Eat, from two experts in Nutritional Health field.

As far as I can tell the obesity we are witnessing today has nothing to do with the food-types.

The problem is eating processed foods. These foods are designed to overcome the body’s natural defences to over-eating. They raise the sugar levels in our blood very quickly and eventually the body’s initial defence is overwhelmed and the body has to resort to other ways of dealing with the sugar.

Our body stores it as fat. Once our body’s ability to burn blood-sugar has become impaired we then become very efficient blood-sugar storers. We store it as fat. When someone becomes efficient at storing fat, nearly all their calories are stored as fat rather than burnt off, that is why obese people will eat even small amounts of calories but not lose body fat but in fact gain it.

I am pleased to say the process has been found to be reversible. I would be happy to expand on this if your readers would like to know more.

There are a few other things going on here.

Firstly we have stopped listening to our bodies – our bodies know what and when they need to eat and drink. But as we are emotional eaters we tend to eat for all the wrong reasons - it looks nice/smells, we’re to tired to make the effort to make something healthy, we’ve had a hard day so we deserve a ‘treat ‘ - and it is always in the form of food. Sometimes when angry or stressed, we reach for the cookie jar to get a blood sugar spike. So eating emotionally leads us to eating foods that quickly raises blood sugar levels.

The other interesting thing is our bodies are chronically dehydrated – we do not drink enough water. Instead we reach for calorie or stimulant laden drinks which the body does not recognise as water.  As we quench our thirst with a coke or coffee our body is still screaming out for water – in our confusion we eat something because we think we must be hungry. As it still screams out for water we either pour more non water liquid or more food into our exhausted bodies and so the calories add up, creating more stored fat. This fat becomes a perfect place to store excess toxins, making it even harder to shift when trying to lose weight.

Is your chicken making you feel stressed?

Chicken should be the healthiest of all the meats but these days they inject hormones and antibiotics that could be increasing your stress.  Also if it is not free range then the chickens get couped up and are subjected to more stress and fear going through them which we then consume.  I would recommend organic free range chicken and eating it with lots of fresh vegetables, especially the green leafy ones (such as kale, watercress, spring greens etc.) which will create a more alkaline environment in your body balancing out the acidity of animal proteins.  Other acidic foods are wheat, dairy, sugar, caffeine etc.  If you need any alternatives feel free to contact Julie on 0161 798 5063.
