Success at Work
When we start our working lives it is usually with an open mind. We are glad someone wants to employ us and pay us. Then after a short period we find it becomes repetitive and boring. However, we continue to do it and console ourselves with the idea of being paid and the leisure activities the money will buy.
Sadly for some this relationship with work lasts for their whole working lives.
Others take a more creative attitude. They look for ways to make their work more interesting and maybe more valuable to the person who employs them.
We hope that this leads to an increase in pay and security.Security is very important at the bottom of the heap. One pair of unskilled hands is very much like another. If the workload drops, the employer will usually fire the least valuable employees, knowing they can rehire someone else when work to be done increases.
‘The only place Success comes before Work is in the dictionary!’
The advice from teachers and parents is ‘get a good education to get a good job’. However, the same applies even after all that expensive education. One newly trained lawyer or accountant is much like another, unless you quickly demonstrate that you bring something extra to the workplace.
So what is that extra something?
There are three ingredients to Success. They are Knowledge, Skill and Attitude. The newly qualified lawyer, accountant or arts graduate has much the same knowledge and skill as his or her peers.
What will become evident within a few weeks is how their attitude varies.
A friend of mine runs a very successful business which operates on the web. He openly admits that he is not an expert in the computer software he uses. Some years ago he came across a young man aged 18 who knew a bit about software and was able to help. So my fried asked him about other issues as they came up. In most cases the young man said ‘I don’t know, but I will find out’. Today that young man is 2? and earns much more than most people his age. He is so busy that my friend can’t get his services immediately any more!
Question: What was the Attitude multiplier ingredient? Answer: ‘…I will find out?’
In the mathematical expression of this formula for success there is an important difference in the value of the ingredients. The formula is:
Knowledge + Skill x Attitude = Success
So what is this mysterious Attitude ingredient which has a multiplier effect? Everyone takes an attitude to work. The attitude can be good or bad. If it is good it raises the value of the Success rating. If it is a bad attitude, it works the other way and reduces it.
So how do you know what your attitude is? Do you know if it is helping or hindering you in your work? How would you improve your success potential at work by changing your attitude?
